Takenitch creek and its associated estuary contained much lower water flow than in previous years with the outlet to the ocean approximately 10 feet wide and 1 foot deep (see pix).

Temperature: 65 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: NW. Tide Level: 3.0 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 4. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 4. Playing in surf: 4. Playing in sand: 4. Sitting: 4. Observed tracks of two different OHV's that crossed the southern motorized vehicle closure boundary sometime after the morning high tide. One OHV drove close to closure sign, stopped, and passed on to the north. (see pix) One SUV was parked just south of motorized exclusion sign then driven south to the south edge of the estuary. No commercial fishing activity was observed offshore.

Apparent violations: OHV intrusion into nonmotorized area south of Takenitch creek.

Disturbances: Shorebirds moving in response to humans/dogs

Notable Wildlife

Few gulls, no sanderlings, no seals, no pelicans were observed in their usual haunts near the surf line.Six to eight immature Snowy Plovers (sandy white with dark legs and bill, 6" tall) were observed in a group located in the dry sand just west of the beach grass and 1 mile north of the Takenitch ocean outlet.

Driftline Content

Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Shells, Small rocks, Styrofoam, Wood pieces.

Natural Changes

Erosion of vegetated foredune.

Actions & Comments

Collected approximately 10 pounds of human debris 50% blown plastic drink containers, 25% various sized pieces of plastic, 25% commercial fishing debris (ropes, floats).
