Mile 102 Report
Coquille River, South Jetty, Lighthouse
April 20, 2015
An exciting morning on the southern stretch was marked by a baby seal on the beach crying for mother.
Report Details
An exciting morning on the southern stretch was marked by a baby seal on the beach crying for mother. (Went back later to find baby gone and mother's trail to the sea.) Spotted my first turkey vulture of the year, dining on a long-dead beaver. Other live wonders: sanderlings, gulls, cormorants, Canada geese, crows. Three rock hunters and 2 dog walkers; 6 vehicles in the parking lot. Wood appears to be moving out to sea from the jetty south to the first cluster of big rocks. Cloudy, moderate north wind and 50. Fewer Velella velella on this stretch, compared with the northern segment thick with them on the high line. The closed upper parking lot for the Coquille River lighthouse apparently was the scene of driftwood fire parties. Perhaps a foot patrol is in order there.
