Report Details

Heading north from the Coquille River Lighthouse early on an overcast morning midway between tides, there was little human activity (2 people, 2 dogs) but a whole lot of birds: hundreds of gulls gathered onshore, flying offshore or fishing and maybe a couple of dozen pelicans doing much the same. Also, scads of cormorants were flying north as well as a smaller seabird in several large flocks that I couldn't identify. Not much litter was evident. But small stones were numerous along this half-mile stretch. No dead mammals or other life forms today. Hurrah! Vehicle tracks were visible just north of the lighthouse parking lot. One set was apparently a bulldozer moving logs toward the sea. I couldn't decide on the other set a bit north of there. Perhaps a beach ranger turning or some illicit driver.

Hundreds of gulls were resting along the 1/2-mile stretch of beach north of the Coquille River lighthouse;others were either flying or fishing. A handful of pelicans were engaged in these activities as well, and several others flew north along with scads of cormorants and a like number of unrecognized smaller seabirds

Driftline Content
