Report Details

This report covers the mile segment from the Coquille River south to Table Rock. No one was on the beach except me and the wildlife. Birds were numerous--gull flocks on the wet sand and on the offshore rocks with cormorants and Black Oystercatchers. Crows as usual were scavenging. Three dead birds: a gull and a cormorant and an unknown that was mostly feathers. The dead Northern Elephant Seal remains on the beach but is riper and riper. It was actually in mile 101. Many small clear jellies in the driftline.

Temperature: 50 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: -1.7 feet.

People watching ocean while sitting in vehicles; no one on beach.

Notable Wildlife

lots of gulls on shore; vocal black Oystercatchers on sea stacks; scads of birds on the nesting rocks and in air nearby; crows scavenging driftline.

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 3. 1 cormorant, 1 gull, 1 unknown.

Stranded Marine Mammals

Total stranded mammals: 1. rotting Northern Elephant Seal remains in the high line just before the rocky passage to Elephant Rock.

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

Unusual concentration. Many very small clear jellies left in the tide lines.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Small rocks. logs and branches, perhaps moved from the winter accumulation.
