Report Details

Fog shrouded the beach on the northern segment of Mile 102 at 5:30 a.m. close to low tide of 0.8 feet. A north wind was of moderate strength. Wildlife was not so apparent until the return walk. By then the fog had lifted. Groups of wimbrels and sanderling-size birds foraged in the wet sand, as did several gulls. Driftline contained Velella velella, a few Dungeness crab shells, shell fragments, small rocks, red and bull kelps, one unknown dead bird with black and white feathers and an open chest cavity. Logs were abundant close to the upper parking lot of the Coquille River lighthouse but thinned out further along. Considerable wave overtopping and erosion of the foredune was evident. A man ran with 3 unleashed dogs in the wet sand.
