Report Details

At 5:30 on a cool, cloudy morning, the beach north of the Coquille River lighthouse was empty of human life but full of other creatures: 8 whimbrels, gulls and crows. Litter was abundant and filled a large shopping bag: plastic bottles and shards, Styrofoam pieces and floats, and a heavily encrusted cooler too heavy and too far up the beach to lug back. Shells, molt, small stones and kelp occupied the drift line as well. Two panel vans were parked in the lower lot when I arrived but there was no sign of the occupants. The mystery of that was solved when I was leaving: a gob of male photographers materialized, getting into the vans.
