Report Details

Was able to positively identify ducks I saw last time as wintering Harlequins. Great Blue Heron was confident we would not be charging out over the rocks to harm it, though it did keep a watchful eye on us. Only found 2 ochre sea stars (migrating to deeper waters in winter?) Usually this time of year there are 4 or 5 waterfalls flowing into the cove, but due to an usually dry fall, there were none this time. Am working on establishing reference points for photos of the bluffs to document erosion over time.

Conditions

Temperature: 65 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 2.0 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 1. Walking or running: 1. I'm guessing the people belonging to the cars up top had already finished and were elsewhere in the park. I was a little late for the low tide.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 2.

Notable Wildlife

1 Great Blue Heron, 3 Harlequin ducks, one owl limpet

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass.

Natural Changes

Landslides/major boulder falls.

Actions & Comments

A few largish bolders fell from the bluff high above the trail's end. I took pictures. I also noticed some dirt disturbance, a smallish mound at the base of the bluff. Wonder if there is a connection at all?? Probably not, just gravity at work. Am working on establishing reference points for photos of the bluffs to document erosion over time. Was able to positively identify ducks I saw last time as wintering Harlequins.

Mile 116

Seven Devils cliffs, Cape Arago South Cove

March 16, 2024

There was a beach hazard statement issued and I wanted to see what impact that would have as we were experiencing the first fine weather after so many weeks of cold rain. I was charmed by a family of six playing on the beach, the children even playing in the water.
