Pleased to see so many  families exploring South Cove's tidepools respectfully.  I  saw a racoon out there. I  do depend on other visitors to cue me in on interesting finds, but in all my years of coming here, this is the first time I've seen one. I brought my binoculars to try and identify any birds I saw, but alas, I had no success. Did hear their distinctive calls, however, as well as an oft repeated refrain,   "I found a starfish!" Beautiful indeed! I need to become more familiar with birdsong,  but I  could identify that last! I  remembered seeing a message advising us CoastWatchers to try and balance the sad fact our rangers our stretched thin. With that in mind, I  did introduce myself to one family and spoke with several more.  I  let 3 know that the tide was on it's way in. I was just out here last month but that one was to make up for missing the Spring survey.  This has been my Summer survey and what a lovely way to spend my morning.

Conditions

Temperature: 54 F. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 0.6 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 67. Number of dogs: 5. Walking or running: 67. Playing in sand: 5. Sitting: 7. Photography: 1. Tidepooling: 60. Many families exploring the tidepools respectfully. Beautiful weather! I'm sure many more people visited after I left.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 13.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells. Struck me that all the crab shells I saw a month ago were pretty much gone. Only trash I noticed was a wooden pallet. Very little plastic. Wasn't thoroughly searching for trash. Don't usually find much.

Actions & Comments

Last summer Parks had cleared a path through the driftwood at the base of the trail. It lasted all last summer but this year,  either it had been a one time thing or SARS CV19 claims another service. Speaking of,  I  did see a few people wearing masks in the great outdoors...including a racoon!

Mile 116

Seven Devils cliffs, Cape Arago South Cove

March 16, 2024

There was a beach hazard statement issued and I wanted to see what impact that would have as we were experiencing the first fine weather after so many weeks of cold rain. I was charmed by a family of six playing on the beach, the children even playing in the water.
