Report Details

A beautiful 4th of July at the South Cove. Many people accepting the invitation by the Park to explore the tidepools. Most people on their best behavior, though I did see some kids climbing a crumbly cliff.

Conditions

Temperature: 66 F. Tide Level: -2.0 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 70. Number of dogs: 9. Walking or running: 70. Photography: 3. Tidepooling: 70. South Cove had a sign inviting people to explore the tide pools. I have never seen so many people on my mile. A ranger was leading a small group, but most seemed on their own. A good number were prepared with rubber boots. I should take the hint. (soggy shoe). It was great to see so many people delighted with their discoveries. I did see 3 or 4 kids climbing over 25 feet up a crumbling cliff wall. I loudly asked them it they'd ever heard about erosion.

Concerns

Climbing bluffs/seastacks

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 27.

Notable Wildlife

6 rayed sea star, Some kind of rock fish or eel.

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 1.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.). Live snails

New Development

Looks like the Park moved a lot of driftwood out of the way for easier access. I don't know how long that lasts, but I appreciated it.

Natural Changes

I noticed bleach eel grass and some kind of white stuff liberally spread on some of the rocks. I found this unusual, but if you look, you can see I don't come to my mile much in the summer.

Actions & Comments

I hollered at kids climbing the cliffs.

Mile 116

March 16, 2024

There was a beach hazard statement issued and I wanted to see what impact that would have as we were experiencing the first fine weather after so many weeks of cold rain. I was charmed by a family of six playing on the beach, the children even playing in the water.
