Report Details

I wasn't able to access my mile because the Tahkenitch Creek trail ,at its mouth, had been eroded back at least 200 yards. ODNRA says trail will be repaired in 3 months. We had 10 plover nests and 2 fledglings this year.

Conditions

Temperature: 65 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NW.

Human Activities

I'm sure you're wondering why the Human and Natural Change boxes are blank - the short answer is that I was unable to access my mile. To access my mile I need to hike along Tahkenitch Creek for about 2 miles to reach the mouth. The creek had migrated so far south that it had eroded about 200 yards of the trail. It had eroded a steep bank of falling shore pines and bushes about 20 ft. high;the steepness of the bank with the stream at the base, combined with the fact that I couldn't find a shallow place to cross, left me high and dry - so to speak.I called the ODNRA and was told the trail would hopefully be repaired in the next 3 months and also that the bridge needed to be moved because of erosion - a very expensive project. I was advised to access my mile in the near future from the Tahkenitch Campground TH. We had 10 nests and 2 fledglings at Tahkenitch this year. This was not encouraging for this area, but the plovers are doing well (numbers up) with regard to all nesting sites.
