Report Details

My last previous report was at the end of 2019, but the changes over the last year are typical of Mile 211, including rockslides or boulder falls, rockfields covering parts of the beach, and a new drainage pipe.  A fairly large number of people were enjoying the beach on a nice rain-free Saturday afternoon, engaging in typical Mile 211 activities such as dog-walking, playing in the sand, fishing, and rock hunting.

Conditions

Temperature: 48 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: SW. Tide Level: 4.1 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 42. Number of dogs: 2. Walking or running: 28. Playing in sand: 4. Surfing: 1. Fishing: 2. Many people were on the beach on this rare day with no rain and only moderate wind. Fyi, I only counted 11 people not wearing facemasks.

Concerns

Apparent violations: n/a.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 32.

Notable Wildlife

2 ducks, 1 turkey vulture, in addition to gulls.

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Styrofoam. A plastic strap, from what I could not tell. Found 2 dark green rectangular objects that looked similar to skate egg casings, but the surface was shiny like plastic though it tore easily unlike plastic. See photo attached.

New Development

Bluff development, Drainage pipes. Only one drainpipe appeared to be new, located about 200 meters north of Thiele Creek. See photo attached. I noted 3 others that I have reported in several previous mile reports.

Man-made Modifications

Along the base of the embankment in the same part of the beach as the rockfield there were patches of rocks fairly uniform in appearance that looked as if they might have been put there intentionally, though there were no houses, motels, or other businesses at the top of that portion of the embankment, so I am not sure who would have put them there. See photo.

Natural Changes

Landslides/major boulder falls.

I tried to pick up and carry back to trash collection area all plastic pieces I found larger than 1 square inch, but for every piece I picked up there were at least 100 smaller pieces, a great increase over the amount of plastic just a few years ago.
