Report Details

Relatively large number of people (for mile 211) were enjoying the beach on a sunny, inviting day.  Standing water in the northern part of mile had disappeared and water level in Thiele Creek at north end of mile was very low.  Parking area at Lost Creek Wayside was nearly full.

Temperature: 69 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NW. Tide Level: 8.3 feet.

Number of people: 19. Number of dogs: 8. Walking or running: 10. Playing in surf: 2. Other Activities: Sunbathing 5; bicycling 2.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 14. RVs/Buses parking: 1.

Notable Wildlife

I observed a solitary common murre struggling in shallow surf and then crawling up onto beach, where it was quickly killed and eaten by two turkey vultures. As far as I am aware mile 211 is far from any murre nesting areas.

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 4. I could not identify species except the murre killed by the turkey vultures.

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.).

New Development

Bluff development.

Natural Changes

Standing water in some areas noted in my June 21, 2021 report had largely disappeared.

My last previous report was at the end of 2019, but the changes over the last year are typical of Mile 211, including rockslides or boulder falls, rockfields covering parts of the beach, and a new drainage pipe.

I tried to pick up and carry back to trash collection area all plastic pieces I found larger than 1 square inch, but for every piece I picked up there were at least 100 smaller pieces, a great increase over the amount of plastic just a few years ago.

The contour of the beach has changed again so that there are numerous patches of standing water at the base of the embankment.
