Mile 303 - Oswald West SP, Smuggler Cove, Short Sand Beach - November 16, 2021

Report Details

We observed typical post rain/storm erosion and debris. The wrack line was surprisingly clean of trash. The concrete dock is becoming buried under sand.

Conditions

Temperature: 48 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NW. Tide Level: 8.0 feet.

Notable Wildlife

Two seals in the surf, seagulls on the beach

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 4. Too decomposed to identify species.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Wood pieces, Styrofoam. Plastic bottles, pieces of plastic all picked up and removed.

New Development

The modifications to the trail to the beach have worked to make it better. Gravel making footing more secure.

Natural Changes

Newly exposed roots/trees falling, Visible retreat of solid bluff. Tree slid down the bank. There is evidence of erosion in multiple locations. We did not notice anything major. The sand is filling in. A buIldup of about two feet in the last couple of months. The river has carved a deep bank on the north side.
