Mile 307 - Cove Beach north, Arch Cape, Arch Cape Creek - September 11, 2020

Report Details

Very smokey from all the fires in central and eastern oregon. Lots of debris from trees had blown into the ocean from the wind storm and wash up at the high tide line. 4 dead birds that had all washed up as well, including one skeleton. A few trees had been knocked over from the windstorm on the south end of Arch Cape beach.

Conditions

Tide Level: 5.0 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 20. Walking or running: 10. Playing in sand: 10.

Notable Wildlife

There seemed to have been an unusual number of dead birds washed ashore. This was just after the large wind storms that we had in early September.

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 4. 2 cormorants and 2 seagulls

Driftline Content

Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces.

Natural Changes

Newly exposed roots/trees falling.

Actions & Comments

The trees had fallen down from the windstorm along the hillside just north of Arch cape. They are all laying alongside the hill.

The wrack line contained small (2-4") crab casings, clam shells and broken sand dollars. There was a small land slide near a house drain line - see picture. The sand level was low on the north end of mile 307 which leaves the rocks uncovered.
